I don't think there were any changes to java.util.regex API.

There were a few:
- better support for unicode, including Pattern.UNICODE_CHARACTER_CLASS as a new flag value.
- support for named groups, which can be queried using Matcher.group(String name)

Relative to regular expressions, the Pattern and Matcher classes are good to know... but we do not cover them in the book.
