I am working in MNC. But I am working as a License support engineer. There is not much work and some times there will be no work also. I am getting 30K+ salary but I am badly unsatisfied with my job what I am doing now. Initially they hired me for the Java Developer position and I am purely Technical person. My interview is completely in Java for 2 hours and I cleared my interview with lot of effort. My family is totally depends on me. I don't have second option too. This is my current situation.
Currently I am having 1 year experience in support. Looking for development opportunities. My manager is not allowing me to change from this position with in the company. I am very much interested in development. Please any body help me how can I design my career. I don't have real time development experience. I can get the job by fake experience but I know that I will caught at project implementation.
Is there any way to change from this support. I fed up with the routine work. Please any one help me.
Start by practising some development, so you will actually know what you are doing at interview. Go through our “beginning Java” and “Java in General” fora and search for Java Projects. That will probably give you some suggestions of how to find things to develop
Many of the best developers that I know started out in support. Support of products, particularly very technical products sometimes require a deep dive into the source code. Many support engineers, that show their skills, either the ability to understand the product at the code level, or the ability to develop support application used internally, gets a transfer to engineering when positions open up.
If it gives you comfort, I once was in the same situation and got back into development again. So it is possible. I took a salary decrease of 20%, and I had to do a lot of convincing to recruiters who wanted to place me in a support position. My first job was just a contract, no fixed position. Hence you just must sacrifice something to get back into development. By the way, the technical skills can be obtained by getting some certs, doing some open source projects. The main obstacle though were the recruiters. They just only saw me as a good card to play out as another support engineer, and were not interested helping me to get a development job. You have to talk a lot to them before they give in, and don't call you for jobs you don't want to do.
