been reading a book on android programming and was making some progress,but having a serious issue understanding uri and content providers. and their function or how to use them

What, specifically, are you unclear about? The book should cover the basics, no? In addition to that, have you worked through http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/content-providers.html and played around with the app that's developed there? If not, that's what you should start with. It's easier to grasp programming concepts if you get your hands dirty.
