Product Reviews -- what is the scope on a retailer's site?

First of all, the retailer here is Amazon -- but this could be with any retailer. And I am *not* complaining about the retailer, so have no issues mentioning who the retailer is.

Here is the story... I bought about a dozen blu-ray movies for black friday. All but one of the disks worked. With one disk, it just didn't work. I returned it for a replacement. The replacement also did not work. And I will be returning the replacement for a refund later this week too.

Anyway, since I bought the product from Amazon, I decided to rate the product on Amazon. It was a product review. The product is defective -- and the replacement was defective as well. I gave it one star. Actually, I would have given it lower if I could -- after all, it didn't work. Somebody just trashed my review -- saying that I trashed the movie because of the disk.

This confuses me. The response was written like I did something stupid. That I may have hurt the movie because I got a defective (actually the replacement too) product. Did I missed something? I bought the product from Amazon. I rated the product at Amazon. Isn't this correct? It just seems really weird to me that the Amazon reviews are for the movie, and not for the product. It is a review on the retailer site, for a product that I bought from the retailer. How could Amazon reviews be for the movie only?

What do you think?

I think you are right. You are rating the product. If I got a book in the mail that was missing pages, I'd rate it low because of that. If I bought a clock that didn't turn on, I'd rate it 1.

I think it is appropriate as well. It's a review of the product, not just its IP.

What yanks my chain though are reviews that rate shipping or packaging that have nothing at all to do with the product. (And also giving a book a one star review because you don't like the samurai on the cover. )

Can you give an example? Everything I'm thinking of about packaging is relevant to the product. Or the vendor.

Ah. Gotcha. So stuff literally in the delivery space. (Which is what you said.) I wouldn't have even thought of those when complaining about a product.

Yes, the reviews should be product-reviews. Movie-reviews are given by Rotten Tomatoes and on IMDb as we all probably know. lol

I think I would (or should) rate the product considering its overall condition after receiving, and.., delivery-issues (like fast or late delivery..).

(Maybe, the persons, whose reviews on the retailer's site, only say about how good the movie is, might have received that movie-product in good and in working condition.. )

It looks like Amazon deleted the other post -- but kept my response...

Not exactly sure how to read it yet, but perhaps Amazon agrees with me. Or perhaps I am an actual paying customer versus some movie zealot.
