How many professional software developers are there?

According to this article from InfoQ there are 11,005,000 professional software developers.

I've heard Oracle say that there are 9 to 10 million Java developers. So, does that 90% of the developers are Java developers?! Java is one of the most used programming languages, but I doubt that these figures can be compared directly like this.

Maybe those "Java developers" include everybody who ever took a course that taught them how to write an applet, and who are now doing something different (or are using different languages).

There may be 11 million folks who claim to be professional software developers, meaning the take a paycheck for writing code.

That does not, IMHO, make them professionals. I would quickly cut out 90% of any mass produced number. Maybe a million, world-wide, maybe
