IS it possible to make a chat system for two different laptops using java RMI, or do i have to use Socket programming.?
Also can I make just one server on one laptop and make it accessible to clients on different laptops (server being on one of them only) ?
Regards.

Generally these kind of systems would have Client/Server architecture where the clients could connect to the server for certain operations and so forth. Typically it would be one server and multiple clients. Yes you can do these things with RMI and/or Socket (if you need more control of what is happening - use specific protocols etc... )
