Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes:

I upgraded to Parallels desktop 9 a day or so ago -- no problem. I am currently learning java, and when I went back to open a program in os X, it started Parallels, and opened up the program in note pad.

This has never happened before; i tried to write a little program in notepad the other day (I think it was after the upgrade), but it wouldn't run when I was at the command line in windows XP; got some error message; I just stopped because I do my work in OS X and only use windows for work.

Now if I want to open my java programs in text edit I have to specify to do that in the terminal application. But this his never happened before. Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to stop this? Has anyone ever had this problem?

It sounds like something set up a file association behind your back.

Right click on the file in question, and choose Get Info. See what the "Open with" section has to say.

Thanks, that did it, but what's strange is that there were other java programs that I'd written that I never opened just now -- and they were set to open with notepad as well. In fact I did a spotlight search on all programs that end with .java and they're all set to open with notepad.

In that same location you can change the setting for all files of the same type.

Note sure what changed it out from under your feet.

Thanks, Bear. I was taken by surprise by this one. and I feel like a bit of a dunce for not getting the solution.
