The BBC reports today:
A new global monitoring system has been launched that promises "near real time" information on deforestation around the world...

Clojure users might be interested to know that Global Forest Watch is partly based on work by Dan Hammer using Clojure and Cascalog to identify areas of deforestation via spectral analysis of images.
