Books tend to have a tutorial nature, not a reference nature; see http://www.javaranch.com/bunkhouse/bookSearch.jsp?title=android for some reviews.

The best reference I can think of is the official one at developer.android.com (which you should already have on your hard disk if you have installed the Android SDK).

I've gone through both of these - they are not reference books, but are quite good and reasonably up-to-date:

Beginning Android 4 Application Development (Amazon)
Android Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (Amazon)

Sorry - those links were a bit mangled - here are links for the publishers' web sites:

Beginning Android 4 Application Development
Android Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide

I too was a beginner.
This is the BEST tutorial I've found for the beginners.
Travis's The New Boston Android Tutorial Series
200 videos. over 6 GB in size.
This won't cover entire android language. But really good for beginners(as I feel).

Thanks!
