read a little about google app engine and datastore though the material didnt exactly partain to android development but java, what i want to know is if i use epp engine data store do i still have to use a php webservice for cloud database.

Indeed, GAE has nothing to do with Android (except, of course, that it can serve as a backend for an Android app).

It has its own storage solution, yo you don't need another DB if you're using GAE for other backend aspects of your app.
