Hi,

I have 3 years and 2 months of working experience in Java as application developer/designer . I have no certifications till date (I should have got at least one by now)

I want to have one now, Please suggest which one to take that will help my career.

SCJP is now called as OCPJP ... which one should I go for OCPJP 6 or OCPJP 7. How long do you guys think is it going to take for the preparation ?
Also kindly suggest the following :
Good books for preparing.
Exam details (fee and where to take the exam)

Thanks!!

Hi Karan Kapoor Singhal

Welcome to Coderanch, I think you are reached at the correct place,

Exam preparation time is based on your interest and the time you spend for your exam preparation. OCPJP 7 is the latest version but if you go for OCPJP 7 exam you need to finish OCAJP 7 exam also otherwise you will not be certified as a Java Programmer. You can directly go for OCPJP 6 exam without any prior exam.

Refer this link for your reference.

Good Luck for your exam preparation!

No, first of all, there is no longer SCJP 6. It is called OCPJP 6 now.
Second, OCPJP 6 and OCAJP 7 are different exams.

Thank You Pawel !!

Is this the book - http://www.apress.com/9781430247647

Will this book cover all the Java Concepts or only the topics that are in the exam? I am asking this because, I don't want to just clear the exam for certification I want to have in depth knowledge of Java concepts.

Thanks

Hello Karan,

Read some success stories from Certification Results, it helps you more for choosing your exam preparation materials and also look at SCJP FAQ. Before start your preparation read it clearly and get some clarifications then start your study.

Good Luck!

Hi Karan,
You can prepare yourself for OCAPJP6 exam instead of OCPJP7 (which requires one more exam to pass to be a java programmer) but with OCPJP, there is no issue. You can prepare yourself by reading K&B Book which is available at http://www.slideshare.net/shivikashyap1/get-100-success-in-ocpjp-6-exam

Sorry, Did not understand this.

For OCPJP 7 certification we have to write two exams OCAJP 7 and OCPJP 7 where as for OCPJP 6 we have only one exam..?

Thanks Shiva, so what do you suggest for a 3/3.5 year experienced Java guy to go with.

Option 1 : OCPJP 6 then OCPJP 7 ?
Option 2 : OCAJP 7 then OCPJP 7 ?

Sorry my Question is similar to the one below but I seriously need your suggestions on this

I'd say;

rather you're experienced but still not certified you should go up with v6, if you get a sucess in there then think about v7. Obviously experience is there but atleast check out how much you know about Java 6.

try a mock at: http://www.quizover.com/quiz/response/java-certification-questions?examId=1577871

thanks.

Whats the best book for OCPJP 6 ?

How about saving your $$$ and doing some real development instead ? In the end, you might be better off after doing some algorithms, unit testing, frameworks instead of the junk Java certification.
It won't do anything for your resume. Pick up a book of cert questions for just fun instead.
