Hi,
I've been programming quite a long time (17 years - C++, Java, C# mainly). I've been a lecturer though for past 3 years and now want to
look at a job as a trainer. Which java exam would you recommend? I still do java in my teaching and also for my hobby.

Many thanks,
Steve

You will have to start with getting the OCPJP, unless you're going straight to the Architect Exam. If you have expertise in stuff like Java SE, EJB, Web Services, JSF or JPA, you should go for the expert exam which will all require you to get the OCPJP first. The OCPJP 6 you can immediately go for, if you want the 7 certificate, you will have to do the associate exam first (OCAJP7).

But I think the OCPJP is the basis for most of the Expert-level certificates and it's a good starting point.

Thanks for that, so it looks like OCPJP 6 first, I'm more of a Java SE developer, although have done J2EE stuff in the past.

There is also the OCMJD which is for Java SE Developer, and it is a Master Exam. You can take that one immediately after you finish your OCPJP exam. Before you get the a Master Certification, however, you will need to take an instructor-led course, which will set you (or your company) back a few thousand.

Thanks again,

Thinking of just doing the OCAJP7 first then the OCPJP7.

Is this the book to get to study for the associate one?

OCA Java SE 7 Programmer I Study Guide (Exam 1Z0-803)

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, that book covers the OCAJP 7.
