Hello All,

This is my first post here ! This forum is amazing .

I am a 1.8 yrs professional , who just quit my first job(@ 1.5 yrs exact) and have joined elsewhere .
I was trained in Java, and I was very passionate to work in the same field, but I had very limited opportunities and jumped.
Unfortunately, I seem to have been mislead in my new firm also, there is again limited Java work. I feel very bad about this, but I dont want to decide anything right now.. I have decided only to jump after an year (after June 2015),but only to a Java profile.
But my work experience is relatively less, and hence I have decided to take up certifications for 3 reasons,

1. In a hope that, atleast having certifications would help me get shortlisted for various interviews to prove my interest, or in simple terms, attain some priority comparing to others competing at the same level
2. To improve knowledge in Java, so that I can better handle and attend interviews
3. And eventually move to a complete Java profile atleast within 2.5 - 3 yrs .

Are these arguments valid? Will doing the certifications help me out in terms of my career ? . I also want to do this now, as I want to gain a very in-depth knowledge
I have planned to do OCJP 6 - 1Z0-851 and OCWCD - 1Z0 - 899
This itself should take about 10 months I suppose. Or any rough idea how long would it take ? . I am a working guy (8hrs a day)
But is this a good combination to do ? Also, I hope OCJP 6 , wont be retired in about a six-month span. I am planning to write it by this december
Please provide your opinions ..

Thanks a lot....

Welcome to the Ranch.

People have their own reasons for getting certified, whether it's required by job or self improvement/learning.

As for your plan (getting OCPJP6 and WCD), I would focus one exam at a time. Don't rush the preparation.

I assume you have some Java knowledge so going for JP6 should be fine. During your preparation, code code code to reinforce the concepts.

Are you using the study guide by Kathy and Bert?

Thanks for the reply !!..
I have got this book of Kathy & Bert .

SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Exam 310-065 Guide (With CD-ROM) (English) 1st Edition
saw thru forums, this s the same prep book for 1Z0-851 also,.
Yes , I am gonna code a lot. So I hope OCJP 6 wont be retiring/get obsolete until the end of this year..
I am good in Java foundation concepts(have been through a good training curriculum), any idea how long I need to prepare as I am also working .. ?, so that I can plan my schedule accordingly .

Great you are using the K&B6 study guide. The v6 exams won't be retiring soon because if there are still the v5 exams around. The v5 exams would retire first.

For the studying time, hard to say. 6 months should be more than enough. It really depends on where you stand right now which I doubt you even know without taking a sample mock. But don't bother. Read the study guide first, have your first round of study first.

When you have done the first round, you should attempt the questions at the end of the chapter. With those, you should know. Review some more on weaker topics (this is called 2nd round). Then attempt mocks (but not too often).
