I'm trying to understand the relationship between JAAS and JDBC

In WebSphere, when setting up a Dynamic cluster I have to first define the JAAS

Then, the datasource

The JAAS has one account/password and the datasource another

I'm not getting the relationship between needing both JAAS and JDBC

There's no intrinsic relationship. JAAS is used more commonly with desktop or web app authentication and authorization, not with JDBC. That may be something that WebSphere adds for its own purposes, which go beyond basic JEE functionality.
