I believe the Open Office word processor has some automation capabilities in this area. A google search for "open office rtf doc automation" found a number of promising hits.

Open Office is free - I have not used MS Word in years!!

I’ve looked at a lot of different solutions, and in my humble opinion Aspose is the way to go. Here’s the link:
