Inner Class Compilation Issue

In Inner Class chapter of Kathy Sierra book say this code will not compile because methods local variable z in Method "doStuff" used in methods local inner class "MyInner"


But in my compiler this code compile fine and also run.
so is the book correct?

The book is correct. That code would not compile when compiled using javac version up to 1.7 because the z variable would need to be declared final.
However, this requirement has been relaxed since java 1.8. Now, the variable needs to be effectively final (not modified anywhere).
