selected dropdown value

I am using something like the below to generate a dropdown list dynamically.

var select = document.getElementById("selectNumber");
var options = ["1", "2", "3", "4", "5"];
for(var i = 0; i < options.length; i++) {
    var opt = options[i];
    var el = document.createElement("option");
    el.textContent = options[i];
    el.value = opt;
    select.appendChild(el);
}

The dropdown is inside a form. On submit I validate the form and submit it to a servlet like:

function submitForm()
{

    validateForm();
    document.<MYFORMNAME>.action="URL TO SERVLET"
    document.<MY FORM>.submit();
}

The call goes to the servlet but in the servlet when I use request.getParamater to get the selected the dropdown value, its null. Am I building the dropdown correctly? Any thoughts?

Does your select tag include a name attribute?

This won't work:
<select id="selectNumber"></select>

But this should:
<select id="selectNumber" name="selectNumber"></select>

Request parameters are sent to the server as name/value pairs, and the name comes from the name attribute. The id attribute isn't sent to the server. It's only used within the browser.
