Currently the best starter book probably is "UML Distilled" by Martin Fowler,
Another good one is "Applying UML and Patterns" by Craig Larman,
Both books are reviewed at the
"The unified modelling language user guide" by Booch Rumbaugh and Jacobson
is a very good ready reckoner. Best if you need to find out UML symbols for
a particular symbol quickly.
