Does anyone know the costs and difficulty of the IBM WebSphere exams? My company is starting to look into certification of employees for the jCert level 2 (UML/WebSphere Solution Dveloper) and I'm looking for any information I can get my hands on. (IBM's site, while broad with what is required, has nothing as to anyone else's impressions of the exam, or costs, and I'm waiting on access to Prometric's site.)
Thanks!

Hi,
I checked out the sample tests here . For the websphere test some of the questions asked were about EJB's and not much of websphere was touched upon. However there were some questions with regard to VAJ. check out this. i am also intrested in the exams of websphere and mqseries. Lets wait and see what others have to say.
for IBM websphere certifications check out this page here

Well, I've tried the practice exam for 406/408 (IBM WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition, V3.5), and managed, without studying, to eek out a 56 and a 60 on two successive attempts.
But that doesn't tell me, unfortunately, how hard the 406 exam really is when you sit down to take it. Can anyone give some kind of idea as to the difficulty?
(Also, I'm curious about the 486 exam - the UML exam required for jCert Level 2... anyone take this one and have war stories to tell? )

Hi Theodore,
I am in the process of preparing for the Oracle Jcert Certifications.I have taken 4 out of the 5 tests, with OOAD with UML remaining.
I would be shifting my focus to IBM track once I am through with the Oracle Track.
I intend to specialize in Legacy to web conversion projects, where expertise in different application servers might be crucial. Also,I feel MQ-Series Certification from IBM, may help. But information on MQ-Series is difficult to find.I had used MQ-Series to make AS/400 talk to Mainframes, but have no idea how this could be attained in Java.I would request the group to come up with a separate forum for MQ-Series, if possible.
I am finding OOAD with UML, not very interesting especially since I have been spending so much on Java recently. However, if you are able to concentrate hard and focus well on it, I donot think this Test would be a tough nut to crack
Good Luck,
Sandeep Desai

Sandeep,

I would request the group to come up with a separate forum for MQ-Series, if possible.

I would like this forum to be for most of the IBM based products which includes MQSeries including the certifications. This forum is relatively new to JavaRanch so we can define what we want from it.
Any more ideas.

Hi Rahul,
Just a suggestion.Inorder to fasten the learning curve of IBM products, we could come out with posts on HOWTO: series.
For instance, HOWTO: Deploy EJB in IBM Websphere Application Server Ver. 3.5
We could start of with this HOWTO series, initially, strictly to the Test Objectives of the IBM Jcert Tests (WAS and VA4J),and later as the group grows look out for other requirements.

Desai,
I think that is a good idea. What we can also do is look at the test objectives and handle each objective in a single thread ex where do i get the resources for the objective. what it means. etc. So the ball is in your court. Lets get started....

Hi Mahindrakar,

Do we have a storing space some where on this site?I have collected a number of documents on IBM WAS and VA4J, but am not very sure from where I had downloaded. It is in PDF's, PPT's Formats.
We could try to get on with this pretty soon.I am busy with the UML test now, but once I am through with it (tentatively by May 25, 2001), I would be able to contribute to make our learning experience successful.
Till then please bear with me.

Hi Mahindrakar,
Kindly post your thread on Resources for WAS ( http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum46/HTML/000008.html )
in the HOWTO: Find info for IBM WAS TESTS post, for the sake of one-point access.

Wish me luck, everyone. I'm scheduled to take the 406 exam on Friday at 10 AM....
I'm crossing my fingers in the meantime. I think I'm prepared decently (we've been doing our own internal intensive study program here at my company) and we'll see how it all bears out in the end.

Hi Desai,
Well, you have two options to program in Java for MQSeries. One is to use Java Bindings which are a bunch of IBM Java APIs for MQSeries; the other choice is, of course, JMS!
BTW, how did you feel about the Test 483, Enterprise Connectivity (with J2EE)? Thanks!

I sat for the 406 test today.
It was... harder than I thought it would be. (We had a few problems with the registration - the card we'd used to registered me had been declined - so it didn't help.) But the pre-assessment test was a good guide to what I could expect, and I actually eeked out a 57% on it.
*whew*
Thank G-d that's over.

Has anyone taken the 486 cert. I wonder if the books recommended as reading are enough to pass. Is the IBM mock test reflective of the real exam. Has anyone found any other mock exams out there.

I have taken the WebSphere Standard Edition Test (406) and the OOAD/UML Test (486) to get the IBM WAS Standard Edition Cert.
I found that the IBM mock tests are very representative of how you will score on the real test. Make sure you take them multiple times and more importantly, understand the concepts behind each question. If you understand the why's and how's of each question and its answers, you'll do well.
For the UML test (486), I found that reading the two recommended books is more than enough to pass, with more of an emphasis on the Larman book.
For the WAS test (406), I found that the best resource to read is the IBM redbook #sg245755(linked below). You can skip all the WebSphere Studio and VisualAge stuff, but make sure you really read the servlets, JSP, and WebSphere chapters. I just skimmed a few of the chapters of the other recommended books as well.
IBM Redbook: http://publib-b.boulder.ibm.com/Redbooks.nsf/RedbookAbstracts/sg245755.html?Open

Manish

I've taken it. The reading material is essential. I would recommend above anything to trust the material. I would:
Take practice exam continously, making sure to understand every question.
Read Distilled.
Read UML and Patterns.
Then read distilled again.
Make sure your getting 90% or above before taking the real exam.
I think this link probably explains my thoughts best. http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000338.html

bhaveshpatel,
Welcome to Javaranch. We follow some rules pertaining to User names. The rules are specified at here
Your User name does not follow these conventions. It is recommended that you immediately register under a name conforming to the conventions.

and if u remember any of the questions in the 498

This is not a site where actual questions are put up or will be allowed to be put up. This is a discussion forum. Moderators and Sheriffs take a serious note when questions are put up and may even inform the required authorities.
Please be careful in the future.
Hope to see you with a new User Name and being a part of a lot of heated discussions.

Hi Coordinator!! i m back to your website with the proper naming convention as you suggested!
I m sorry for that trouble. About Questions, i think, if one wants to prepare for some exam, he can always give his personal mail id, enabled,(which i have) and ask somebdoy to mail him, if not put on this forum!
what do u say!

The issue, I don't think, is one of posting the questions or not. It's against the agreement that one signs to take the test to share information about specific questions. And posting that information here can get JavaRanch in a lot of trouble with the company whose test it is (in this case, IBM).
For instance, I can tell my coworkers what subjects were tested, and things of that nature, but I can't tell them exact question wording or answers from the exam - it defeats the purpose of having an exam if people can get the answers and pass without really knowing the information.
Just got to be careful, you know.

Hi
The following link shall give all the information required for IBM certifications. This site specifically discusses the objectives, resources for preparations , pre_assessment tests , and the data regarding the fee , registration etc.
http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ad/certify/websphere/v35/adcswsv35.html
Hope this shall be useful for information regarding IBM tests.
As regards to IBM WAS 3.5 standard edition , it does not deal with EJB.The difficulty level of pre assessment exams is similar to that of the actual cert exam.
I recently cleared the standard edition with a score of 83%.
