Certificate without LDAP

Hi all,
I have a basic doubt. Is it possible to authenticate a client using certificates without the use of LDAP Server. Does the websphere permit it. If so, can you give any reference material on that.

To use certificates WAS needs LTPA as the authentication mechanism and an LDAP user registry.
