WebSphere 3.5.6 and JDEdwards

Following is my environment description:
Server 1: Running SQL2000 and One World Enterprise Server (JDEdwards)
Server 2: Running WebSphere 3.5.6
The have following two problem:
1) Once you start the WebSphere and the JDE JVM, any form you go into, the first query you run takes 1-2 minutes. Any subsequent queries on the same form (either in the same login session or different) takes less than 20 seconds. Is their any kind of preload/caching etc. for the JSP's possible so that this is avoided.
2) What we also found out was that any queries to the SQL2000 server going through WebSphere do lot more I/O's than running the same queries via the JDEdwards fat client. Can this be any issue with JDBC version etc.
Any help would be appreciated, as we have drawn blank both from IBM WebSphere and JDEdwards.
Thanks,
Murli
