Someone else asked about the inner workings of JavaRanch, whether flat files or RDBMS were used, etc. Paul Wheaton replied that the company that provided the current stuff used Perl, but that it is releasing a Java version soon. I was just wondering if any further information was available. When is the release scheduled? Is this a for-cost product or shareware? Does anyone have any thoughts on the easiest (and cheapest) way to implement a site like JavaRanch (i.e., where questions are posted and answered and the history of this can be searched)? Thanks in advance.
for more info on the Java version, go to www.infopop.com. The down side is that you can't run it on your own server, you have to run it on their server. And their rates are steep. It's cheaper for JavaRanch to keep plugging along with the Perl version. If you want to implement a discussion forum like JavaRanch's Big Moose Saloon, I suggest that you go to ultimatebb.com and buy their software. It's a coupla hundred bucks. Good stuff! Then, find a site that runs Perl and install it. The software vendor will install it for you for a few bucks more.

I'd agree with Paul. I'd love to see a Java-based BB that's anything like as nice to use as UBB (the software used here). I got to a lot of sites with "discussion areas" and most of them are complete rubbish - hard to read, hard to post to. When I get fed up with other boards, I ask them to look here. I don't know if they do, though.
