Hi:
For OCP-DBA exam, currently there seems to be no exam for Oracle 9i. So if I want to get started now with PL/SQL exam, should I give the exam for 8i (and complete all the exams for 8i) and take the 8i to 9i upgrade test? Please let me know if you have any information about the 9i DBA exams.
Thanks,
Gaja Venkat

Hi Gaja,
Please follow this link http://www.oracle.com/education/certification/index.html?dba9i_track.html
and you will be on your way to OCP - DBA 9i track info. They have recently announced this full certification, earlier there was a beta test for the upgrade from 8i to 9i but now there is whole DBA 9i certification.
HIH.

Hi Farooq:
Thanks a lot for the information. Yes, earlier there was the beta exam and for some period, I guess, that was stopped and the 9i track also was not there!
Great news is that Oracle 9i DBA track has only 4 exams as compared to 5 exams in Oracle 8i DBA track!
Thanks again,
Gaja Venkat

Hi Rajat:
I am afraid I am not in a position to give any solid advice. The reason is that I myself do not have clear judgement about 8i or 9i. But I can perhaps tell you about my thoughts - for me more bias has been towards 9i from the beginning. The reasons are:
1. 9i is the most recent version, atleast as of now and atleast when compared to 8i.
2. 9i exam has only 4 exams, where as 8i has 5 exams.
3. There seems to be an upgrade exam from 8i to 9i. This means to reach the same destination of 9i certified status, a total of 6 exams are there if I follow 8i track, where as only 4 exams are there if I follow 9i track.
I do not know, if by reducing the number of exams, each exam has been made more tough in 9i when compared to 8i. But less number of exams means atleast less expenditure and somehow it means less time too to me!
Further, I have not given any exam in 8i, so I very well get biased to start 9i track.
But please note that the above statements are just my thoughts and I do not have any experience with Oracle exams to really compare & contrast and then make judgement!

Oracle9i Certified Database Associate
The Oracle Certification Program begins with the Associate level. At this apprentice skill level, Oracle Associates have a foundation knowledge that will allow them to act as a junior team member working with database administrators or application developers. The Oracle Associate certification gives a beginning IT professional recognition for their abilities and can facilitate building a career with Oracle technologies.
To become an Oracle Associate, you must pass the exams required for the Oracle Associate level of your selected job role. Typically, two exams are required; the first one can be taken via the Internet, while subsequent exams must be taken in a proctored environment. By completing your Oracle Associate, you are half-way toward achieving the Oracle Certified Professional credential.

The OCA program recommends the following Oracle University Instructor-Led and Technology-Based (Computer-Based) Training for the most complete exam preparation. The required exams are listed in the left column shown below.
Exam 1
Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL
Exam number: 1Z1-007
Exam 2
Oracle9i Database: Fundamentals I
Exam number: 1Z1-031
----------------------------
Oracle9i Certified Database Administrator
Oracle9i Database OCA
Oracle9i Certified Master
Oracle9i Upgrade
Oracle Certified Professional
The Oracle Certified Professional credential is the next step in a rewarding career working with Oracle technologies. After achieving your Oracle Associate credential, you will need to continue your Oracle training and gain on-the-job experience to pass the required exams and move up to the OCP level. Oracle Certified Professionals have proven skills for managing a large scale database or developing robust applications that are deployed enterprise-wide. To become an Oracle Certified Professional, you must pass all required exams in your selected job role, including those at the Associate level. When you obtain this credential, you will have a valuable asset as you apply for more senior level opportunities and gain more credibility and support from your employer. Oracle Certified Professionals are ranked above all other IT certification holders as both the most sought after professionals in today's marketplace and the highest paid.
Four exams are required. Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) certification for Oracle9i requires that you pass the two exams in the Oracle9i Certified Database Associate (OCA) track and the two exams shown below.
Exam 3
Oracle9i Database: Fundamentals II
Exam number: 1Z1-032
Exam 4
Oracle9i Database:
Performance Tuning
Exam number: 1Z1-033

Hi Gaja,
I passed the 9i: SQL exam last week. I BARELY passed with a 78% ! I used the OCP Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam Guide by Jason Couchman. I thought the book was decent, but not the greatest. I thought it could have been a little more in depth in certain areas and there were more errors than I usually find in books, especially in the section quizzes.
There were a few things on the test that were not in the book, such as a few functions and iSQL*Plus (It's possible that I missed them).
I'm not sure if there are any other books out yet. If there aren't, I would say this book is worth getting started with. However, I wouldn't rely on it alone. Even though I didn't study very long (11 days) I don't think I could have gained that much more from this book (but I could be wrong ).

Hi John:
Congrats on passing the 9i SQL exam and thanks for sharing the info. When searching for 9i SQL books for the exam, I came to know about Jason Couchman book; but I also read reviews of his books(8i mostly), which say that his books are good but have lots of errors!
May be for 9i exam, it is a good choice as not many books are available now!
Did you use any other resources for the exam?
Thanks,
Gaja Venkat

I did not use any other resources to prepare for the test. I didn't have access to an Oracle DB either! I was hoping that the book would be enough. It was, but barely. If I got two more questions wrong, I would have failed! However, I didn't study very long (less then 2 weeks).

Hi all,
Any idea about the availability of DBA kit for Oracle 9i DBA exam?
Also, please let me know if you know of other exam preparation books for Oracle 9i DBA other than Jason Couchman books.
Thanks,
Gaja Venkat

Not exactly a DBA kit but a boxed set to cover the entire OCP track will be available from July 2002.

Thanks. But that book-set is also by Jason Couchman! Looks like his books are the only available books now for Oracle 9i DBA exam preparation! I do not know how good STS (Self Test Software)would be.

Hi all,
I passed 1Z1-007 a few week ago with 83%. I did not buy any book for this exam. I used all of Oracle's PDF documents that are available on otn.oracle.com.
Here is my advise for this exam:
if you are new to Relation Database ( like Oracle etc) you may start with http://www.w3schools.com SQL Tutorial. then download Oracle9i SQL user guide and I SQL plus PDF documents. It is very easy exam though.

If I am rich, I will spend more.<p>IBM 486 (OOAD & UML) & 141 (XML) passed<br />Oracle 1Z0-007 passed<br />MCSD MCDBA MCSE <br />SCJP SCSSA<br />CCNA CNA A+

Dear Rancher
here is how did prepare for this Exam.
1.Join Oracle OTN and download free Oracle9i and install on my PIII box.
link: http://otn.oracle.com
2. get SQL user guide or reference guide PDF file from OTN web site
3. try all of example queries on the guide with SQL*Plus, especially different kind of JOINs, Natural Join, Left, right, full joint, inner join and alternative equiliant subquery. but be careful Oracle elder join style by using + sign which is still working on 9i. if you are new to 9i, you may need to read more on 8i's documents
4. try most of built-in functions
5. know relationships about table View index etc.
6. Create some stored procedures, triger, table
7. create users, roles and grant permission to them
8. pratice to use ISQL*plus and know what it is ? and what does it do? and what command can be use on it?
that's it, Good luck everyone

I am starting my testing real soon. The first one probably next week. Then the Fundamentals I after that. Then two more classes and finish with the last two tests.
