Hi,
I am trying to import to a remote oracle database. I have a dmp file from my own database but i am sure that you can imp to a remote db by something like.
imp user/password@ipaddress:1521:instance
it does not work though i am sure i am close in my syntax. can anybody tell me what i am doing wrong?

Well if you have access to the remote database, you can have it in your tnsnames.ora file and then you connect exactly like you do to your local database.
For example
<<TNS_NAME HERE>> =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <<ip address here>> (PORT = 1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = <<database service name here>>
)
)
then you use:
imp user/password@<<TNS_NAME HERE>>
