HowTo: Optional mod files in Apache

I am slowly working my way to running Apache. I know I can do Tomcat with PWS, my other server, but why should I?
I want to use mod_rewrite. I assume I uncomment the "LoadModule" and "AddModule" directives for this (this all taking place in "httpd" config file). So far so good. Then what?
Do add an "IfModule" thingie? and just work it? Does it matter where on the file I put this thing? It seems a little random at the moment because I can't find this explicitly stated in any docs.
Anybody?
Bueller?

BTW, If Meadowlark is too long you can just call me Lark.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
