Tomcat as a Plumtree Portal Gadget Server

Hello all....
I'm working on a project right now where we're going to use Tomcat 3.1.2 as the gadget server for a Plumtree 4.5 portal. I'm going to write some simple gadgets (basically servlets that yield HTML, and which are potentially section 508 handicapped-accessible). Has anyone on here ever used Tomcat in this way? I'd appreciate any guidance/resources/links/advice you can send my way.
I have a copy of the Plumtree Gadget book, and their java GDK, but it all sort of reads like stereo instructions.
Thanks in advance.
