not able to deploy application

am not able to deploy any application on tomcat 4.0, while my earlier deployed applications are running fine. I am maintaining the complete web-app directory structure.What may be the reason. Is it necessary to have mappings in web.xml file? Can't we execute a servlet located
in webapps/myapplication/web-inf/classes/MyServlet
by http://localhost:8080/myapplication/servlet/MyServlet without having any mappings

You need to perform the following to Deploy Web app on Tomcat:-
1. Created the web application folder and its directory structure in {tomcat}/webapps/ folder (.. I suppose this you have already done.)
2. Map servlets in the web.xml file.
3. Make a context entry in the {tomcat}/conf/server.xml file.
4. Stop and Start the tomcat server again
