Excel file not opening in Tomcat 4.1.29

I am using tomcat 4.1.29.When i try to open an excel file from browser it is showing like a text file.word files are opening properly.I have seen someone posted the same problem in Tomcat forum but i am unable to find the solution for it.Someone please help me on this..

please find some other means rather than sticking to 4.1.29.

1. is your browser configured to treat xls files by opening excel?
2. does your web.xml file in the ../conf directory have an entry in the mime-mapping list for "xls" file type? Mine doesn't - so I can't tell you exactly what to use.

Hey all. I just wanted to post an update to this thread because I had the same problem recently and had a hard time finding any information about it anywhere on the web.

I modified my web.xml file to add a mime-mapping element for xls extensions with a mime type of application/msexcel.

I restarted Tomcat and it works great.
