RequestInterceptor in Tomcat 5

I am using Tomcat 5 but I am using a JSP book written when there is only Tomcat 3. One of the examples of this book uses the RequestInterceptor which reference the class org.apache.tomcat.request.SimpleRealm. Looking at Tomcat 5 documentations, I cannot seem to locate any reference to RequestInterceptor. So my questions now are: does RequestIntereceptor still exists in Tomcat 5 ? If not, what is its replacement?

It might have been replaced in Tomcat 4x and 5 with the Valve.

However, even Tomcat developers would tell you that the newest, and most portable way to do 'request interception' is with Filters. (part of the Servlet 2.3 spec).
