Apache Configuration in Linux

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone here could help me with configuring the default website for my Linux machine running Apache?
Let's say the machine is called machine1 and the home directory is /var/www/html. Could someone give me a step by step to go through the configuration process to allow me to type http://machine1/application_folder_holding_an_index_file? It was working before but I was screwing around with it and now it doesn't seem to work. Should I shut or turn something off after making changes? I'm a newbie to this and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh by the way, I'm referring to using the Apache Configuration program that provides the user with a GUI to change these things.

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
