installing Tomcat 5.5 for Head First JSP

I am just starting to run the first exercise in Head First Servlets & JSP. I installed J2SE 1.5 and Tomcat 5.4. The book says to start Tomcat using, however, this script does not exist in the tomcat/bin folder. (note, it does exist in my previous install C:\jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3\bin).

Is my installation of Tomcat 5.5 correct?

When I try to run Tomcat5.exe I get the following message:
C:\Tomcat 5.5\bin>tomcat5
------------- error message at startup of Tomcat
This release of Apache Tomcat was packaged to run on J2SE 5.0
or later. It can be run on earlier JVMs by downloading and
installing a compatibility package from the Apache Tomcat
binary download page.

Hi Richard,

I suggest you read the RUNNING.txt under your tomcat directory. It provides basic instruction on how to install/setup/run Tomcat. I could see the startup.bat/sh file under tomcat-5.5.4\bin directory. If you couldn't find it, I suggest that you re-download Tomcat here.

1. set JAVA_HOME=c:\jdk1.5.0
2. set CATALINA_HOME=c:\tomcat-5.5.4
3. To start the server: c:\tomcat-5.5.4\bin>startup.bat (For windows, use the *.bat. For Unix, use *.sh).

I don't get it. I downloaded and re-instlled Tomcat 5.5.4 again and got the same results. As shown in my original post there is no RUNNING.TXT nor STARTUP.* files in the Tomcat folder.

The installed product contains 9.91 MB, 454 files, 78 folders

My previous installation of jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3 does contain a version of these files. This older version contains 244.0 mB, 1,322 files, 199 folders.

Why is there such a discrepancy in the file count, and missing critical files?

I just downloaded Tomcat version. The zip file is around 5.56M. Unzip this file under your c: directory. For my case, after unzipping, I changed the directory name jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4 to tomcat-5.5.4. Which version (, 5.5.4.exe, 5.5.4 Deployer etc) did you download?

Here is what I downloaded.
-->Release Builds
-->Tomcat 5.5.4
-->jakarta-tomcat-5.5.4.exe (4,265 KB, 29-Oct-2004)

After running the exe I find only 4 files in the \Tomcat5.5\bin folder:

The Tomcat5.5 home folder contains 9 sub-folders and 3 files:
(there is no RUNNING.TXT)

I tried out Tomcat 5.5.4.exe. Indeed the bin directory only contains 4 files. In that case, how about you download

Right on! That worked, I am now on my way with the tutorial.

I am very impressed with the responsiveness and effectiveness of this group.

Thank you very much.
