TOMCAT set up for LDAP

My understanding of TOmcat dcoumentation is as below:

Tomcat web.xml config file can be set up to point to LDAP. Only thing I need to set up there is LDAP URL, LDAP root login/password(for searching LDAP).

Having done that if I set up tomcat for basic authontication and if user types in his ldap userid/password the tomcat should be able to authonticate the supplied user credentials against ldap. We do not have to create any users in tomcat as the authontication is done really against ldap.

Is this a right understanding? I wish i can try this on my own but still am far away from that moment. I am just trying to confirm my views here.
