Used to be (Tomcat 4) that if you tried to install an error-page for code 401, the user would see the page without being prompted to log in. There were workarounds, but the behavior was considered a bug in Tomcat.

Now I find that in Tomcat 5.5(.9) that a 401 error-page is simply ignored -- no matter what I do, it doesn't appear, ever. I have a 404 page working fine. Does anyone have any info on this? Is this the expected behavior now?

plenty of googlehits, about this problem.

http://issues.eu.apache.org/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance+desc&bug_status=__closed__&product=Tomcat+5&content=401

issues.eu?? anyways.

nothing in there seems to hint at your situation, indeed the 'consensus' of tomcat developers seems to think the 'old' behaviour is correct and anything else is a bug.
