how does a web app start up.

I need to learn a bit more about how tomcat starts a web app. I'm a new web developer who is trying to setup a local test copy of a production app on my local machine, and i'm obviously running into problems.

my question. Does anyone know of any online (or printed) docs that outline the detail ( I don't need to know source code method calls) how tomcat works with webapp, so I can follow the steps on my local machine and figure out where my problem may be?

You might try this Tomcat documentation for an overview.

The first thing that happens, and must complete before anything else happens, is that Tomcat reads/parses the web.xml (deployment descriptor) for the application.
