problem deploying a war

Hi all,

I'm rather new at Tomcat, so what I'm saying might sound trivial to you.
I've just joined to a project, where there was already a production tomcat (5.5.17) installed on a linux machine. There is only one app running, deployed under webapp.

When I try to deploy a new war file (even the same old one, just with a different name), tomcat reloads the old app successfully but freezes off as soon as it tries to do the same with the new app.
The same thing occurs if I explode manually the war, and also increasing the max allocated memory. The logs just say that the host config is deploying the war, then the process freezes and I have to kill it.
