On Windows, I've always uninstalled one and installed the other (backing up any apps and/or config files, of course).
On Unix I just install the new one right next to the old one and change the symlink so it points to the new one.
If you're on windows and didn't install the .exe version, you can do something similar to what I did with Unix and re-name the directories.
