I have been tasked with updating from tomcat stone age to the newest version. They have the server.xml configured with a hardcoded path via a context conatiner and context path. Should I just copy the entire container out of the old server.xml and put it in the newer version of tomcat's xml?

Do the newer versions of tomcat allow this?

I fought with them and tried to make it a webapp but they just want it function using the exact same method. >.<

newer versions of tomcat still supports contextpath, you can just copy the old one into new server.xml. contextpath and docbase attributes of Context element.
