When i try to execute the startup.bat file i get the below
Using CATALINA_BASE: H:\apps\xp\desktop\apache-tomcat-6.0.10
Using CATALINA_HOME: H:\apps\xp\desktop\apache-tomcat-6.0.10
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: H:\apps\xp\desktop\apache-tomcat-6.0.10\temp
Using JRE_HOME: C:\Program Files\Java\j2sdk1.4.2_13

. then another window opens and it closes.

In IE when i type http://localhost:8080/, it displays page not found
Please advise.

That window belongs to catalina.bat - something is going wrong but the window closes before you can see the exception report. The log files may contain a report. You can also change the last executable line of startup.bat from:

call "%EXECUTABLE%" start %CMD_LINE_ARGS%

to

call "%EXECUTABLE%" run %CMD_LINE_ARGS%

to keep running in the command prompt window so you can see the result.

(thats from Tomcat 5.5.20, I am guessing its the same in tomcat 6)
