Question about logging

1) Since one can't write within a web application directory a good place for an application's log is Tomcat's log directory. Is there a container variable to access the container's log directory or do I have to navigate to it by something like ../../logs/app-name/

2) Do I have to expect problems with user rights when accessing the log file?
