Tomcat shutting down automatically

Hi,

Using putty session, i started tomcat on solaris server. I am able to see that tomcat is up when putty window is open.

When putty session window is closed, Tomcat is shutting down automatically.

No messages found in logs about automatic shutdown.

Please help me....

Are you starting Tomcat as a background job? Any foreground job started in a shell is terminated if the shell is closed.

I don't know the concept of background and foreground process.

Can you please explain the difference?

I started tomcat from bin directory.

./startup.sh

For starters, use "./startup.sh &" instead of "./startup.sh". That will give you your command line prompt back after you start Tomcat. But it will still be terminated if you end the terminal session.

If you connect to a Unix-ish machine through Telnet or SSH, you can use the amazing utility screen to start processes and keep them running after you log out. An introduction can be found here.

You should also get familiar with the 'nohup' (no hangup) program.

Type:

man nohup

for more information.
