Untar tomcat.
Set your JAVA_HOME environment variable.
Run the startup.sh script in tomcat/bin.

Then you again haven't follow the complete instruction :-)

$ export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_05 #without the bin

then untar tomcat like this:

$ tar zxvf jakarta-tomcat5.0.28.tgz

then you can cd into tomcat
$ cd jakarta-tomcat5.0.28/bin && startup.sh

If you want better help, past the error you are getting on what steps.

How did you set your JAVA_HOME environment variable?
Did you test it? How?

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
