You can place under $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/lib dir.

This is something that I never quite understood. Is there a major difference between throwing this jar in the lib vs. the deploy directory?

Obviously, there's the hot deploy factor, but I have always put that thing in deploy, and never had a problem as long as I put the whatever-ds.xml in there afterwards.

Any thoughts?

The deploy directory contains the deployable components like war,jar (ejb),sar etc. The lib directory contains library files. You cannot put war inside the lib directory.
