JSP app not seeing environment variable

Platform:
XServer G5, OSX 10.3.8, Java 1.4.2_05

App Server:
JBoss

I set an environment variable in my profile and run.conf. The JSP app run fine in Tomcat but I keep getting an error that it it not defined in JBoss. Any ideas why?
