This week's book giveaway is in the OCAJP 8 forum. We're giving away four copies of OCA Java SE 8 Programmer I Study Guide and have Edward Finegan & Robert Liguori on-line! See this thread for details.
If I am calling a remote EJB (in another machine) from an ordinary java class (non-web), do I need to install something in the client machine? Recall that in J2EE SDK1.3, we need to use the 'runclient' command to run the application client. So what is the part in JBOSS equivalent to a 'runclient' of J2EE SDK?
I dont think there is such a command in the case of JBoss. You can write simple application client and run in any machine. You need jbossall-client.jar in the classpath.

Then is it possible for the client to lookup up UserTransaction and starts a transaction in the client? Would the context propagates to the EJB?
If the client is web, it is possible because web client within web container is a 'J2EE client' (a client which itself confirms to J2EE). But, can a standalone client without something like 'runclient' as the container do J2EE things?
