If you're familiar with J2EE, JBoss AS (Application Server) is a fully J2EE compliant Open Source application Server, so it provides a runtime for Web-based technologies (JSPs, Servlets, Web Services, MVC frameworks) and backend technologies (EJBs, JMS, and JavaMail). If you're familiiar with commercial tools such as WebLogic or WebSphere, JBoss goes head-to-head with them on core J2EE functionality. Right now, JBoss is the leading J2EE server. With that said, the commercial products have better admin tools. But I've seen a number of large companies who use JBoss successfully in production every day.

JBoss also works with other Open Source products including Hibernate and Drools (a Rules Engine).
