Admittedly, Google claims 64.100.000 results for Orion, but only one in the top 10 has a connection with Java: www.orionserver.com

This is more background information than anything else. Back when J2EE was first getting attention, (98/99 timeframe), OrionServer was the gold standard. All of the J2EE classes I taught used OrionServer because it was so good, and free! Sometime later I heard (purely rumor) that Orion's J2EE container was purchased by Oracle.

In any case, its a good, J2EE container, and a quick review of the http://www.orionserver.com/ website appears to show it still as free for DEVELOPMENT purposes.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Unless you really suck at it. Then, you might just want to try something else, if you dont' want to be a loser I mean.

I think Oracle App Server is based on Orion Server.

Oracle purchased a sourcecode license to Orion at some point and created their own server based on it. The current Oracle server is quite different from the current Orion server AFAIK.

Main strengths of Orion have always been standards compliance and performance.
Main weakness is the lack of decent graphical deployment and monitoring tools.
