I know nothing about PHP, but comfortable with server side programming & scripting. Any suggestions/recommendations for a first book on PHP wher I can pick up stuff fast?

How about PHP5 for dummies / PHP and MySql for dummies ?
The second one I find better.
But if you can wait, better go for
Pro Ajax and PHP
