Hi,

Can someone say anything about the upcoming Head First PMP? Is it in line with previous Head First books or at least did the authors have previous Head First books in mind when they wrote about PMP?

Regards,
Darya

There is a head first PMP !!?? Only technical head firsts interest me. If they are trying for a head first PMP they might be breaking new grounds into management. Good luck if its true

Its kind of weird seeing a head first for management. For the first time I cant relate to a head first. But I guess its a good market to get into. My co worker says there are good books for PMP certifications but I guess they would not be brain friendly.

You know we'll always have a special place in our hearts for Java and computers in general, but our other passion is for figuring out better ways to teach complex topics in ANY domain. For instance, we are currently involved in several HF books whose topics are in academic areas; Algebra is one of these topics.

Bert,

did the authors have knowledge of Head First Design Patterns and Head First OOAD and made some references to them in their book?

Darya

Hi Darya,

The PMP book uses the same brain-friendly learning principles as all the other HF books. The style is the same, but of course the subject matter is totally different. So the authors understand how HF works, but other than that there is no connection to any of the other HF books.

Can I ask why you would want the authors to refer to design patterns in a PMP book?

Of course you can. My knowledge of PMP is near zero, but then I read Amazon.com's book description about Head First PMP.

They talk about PMBOK knowledge areas:

Integration, Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, HR Management, Communication, Risk Management, and Procurement

Aren't these all related to the management of software and people? When we talk about software which we want to manage, shouldn't that software be somehow tangible. I agree Head First Design Patterns may be has no impact in that but Head First OOAD could have a strong impact. Why? Because there you create a feature list. This is a very tangible thing. Actually this feature list is the basis for any plan.

If I am wrong feel free and correct me .

Hi Darya,

Okay, now I understand a little better. There should certainly be communications between the designers of a software project and the project managers, but these two books don't go into any overlap there. The PMP book is pretty focused on the PMP exam and certification.

Release date is in ten days: March 1st 07.
One more certification looking forward to.

I like HF+Whizlab combination for certification exams. You get the concepts to your head fast with HF approach and then sharpen your brain with whizlab.

Rahul, you may be correct, but ... if you're looking at the date on Amazon's site, I wouldn't place any bets for now.

Having said that, I have pre-ordered the book and am looking forward to picking up a little PMBOK know-how.

Heck, I even pre-ordered HF Algebra (somewhere my high school math teacher is rolling over in her grave).

Bill,

are you pointing to the HFOOAD story? I hope that was an exception and does not become a rule  .

After seeing 3 Head First books, I think that, they are a really nice way on treading a road you havent been before.

I both passed the exams, and able to use what I got from the books, without looking at the books again. Sometimes, I am surprised that I still remember them.

Yes, any category (e.g. Management, Architecture, Calculus, Electromagnetics, Theory of Computation, how to cut toe nails, etc.), I think, will be helped by the Series.

Hi guys,

We're not very involved with the PMP book, but ORA just told me that that book is almost ready to go - you have to believe me that I'm really just guessing here, but from what I've been told I'd bet that the PMP book will be available in the first half of April...maybe, just maybe in late March.

Remember, this is nothing more than an educated guess!!!

hth,

Bert

Is there a difference between A Brain-Friendly Guide to the PMP Exam / A learner's guide to studying for the Project Management Professional exam and A Brain-Friendly Guide / A Learner's Companion to Passing the Project Management Professional exam?

Is it still a Study Guide for the PMP exam?

Usually it takes a couple of months for an Indian edition to come out - once the US edition is on the shelves I'll see what I can find out that's more definite.
