I'm looking at Head First Java and I'm not all the way there, maybe 50% of the way ready to understand where it starts. What would be a good book or two to get me up to speed for Head First Java and its concepts?

You know, the Head First books really are excellent, but they are really best enjoyed after a bit of a background in Java.

I provided some training to people without any Java programming, and I started them with Beginning Programming with Java by Barry Burd. We then worked up to Head First Java.

Beginning Programming with Java by Barry Burd

The reviews this book has are excellent, the author has a great deal of experience, and I think that it is a very excellent lead into Head First.

Remember, Head First Java is a primer for the SCJP certification. That's a pretty tall order! I don't think too many people could make a certification guide for Sun's prestigious certification an effective first or second book on Java.

And keep posting! When things don't make sense, we're here to help and answer your questions. Even if you think it might be too simple of a question, don't let that stop you. Being able to answer simple questions makes us feel alot smarter than when we can't answer the hard ones.

Kindest regards!
