I am interested in submitting articles to technical magazines on Java and related topics. Where would you suggest I get started? Are there particular magazines or webzines which are more open to considering a submission by an unpublished freelance writer? Thanks in advance!

The JavaRanch Journal is open to submissions for articles. Contact me privately if you'd like to talk about specifics.

I'd also suggest simply writing about interesting topics and things you learn on your own blog.

Blogger.com has a great interface, and makes it easy to add Google Adwords, Ebay Affiliate and Amazon associate links so you can potentially earn a few dollars on referrals as well.

The other nice thing is that the information is all accessible through the Google, Java based, Blogger API, so you can access your stuff programatically as well.
